There honestly isn't much to explain humans are, well you me and every other schmo out there on the streets. Most have only the most rudimentary understanding of the supernatural. Humans know that vampires and lycanthropes exist, and tend to discriminate against them. Vampires have, as of recently, been declared legal citizens of the United States, which doesn't stop certain groups from protesting, if not killing, them. Its partially from ignorance and partially from self-preservation. Lycanthropes fair far worse as in some states it is still legal to shoot lycanthropes on sight - provided you can prove they are lycanthropes...(which thanks to modern science is a simple as a blood test)
If a supernatural being winds up on the wrong side of the law, they typically face a very brief judicial process, as it is nearly impossible to hold them in prison. Illegalities include turning a human into a vampire/lycanthrope against their will, turning a minor into a vampire, feeding off of a human against their will, or intentionally turning a human into a lycanthrope. Killing someone with magic leads to death within 48 hours regardless of species - a judge, if convinced of the supernaturals guilt, can issue a warrant of execution without trial.
The SRS: Special Research Section
The SRS is a FBI division set up to handle national preternatural crime. Before the division was created, preternatural crimes were investigated by the Investigative Support, the FBI's serial killer profiler unit. They operate officially in one to two men teams. In truth the agents are the field leader and leaders of SPOOK Squads that use the intel gathered by the agents to execute dangerous preternaturals. The division's leader is Bradley Bradford.
RPIT: Regional Preternatural Investigation Taskforce
Many police departments have a squad specifically for dealing with the supernatural. This squad tends to be a dumping ground for police who have pissed off the higher ups, however, and the budget typically doesn't include enough to provide even silver bullets. Even the FBI has proven to be very inexperienced in dealing with vampires and/or lycanthropes - only those on the inside know the full intricacies of supernatural culture and abilities.
Vampire Executioners
There are eight of these living in the United States, two of whom are retired. Possibly the most well-known of those who haven't retired is Anita Blake, but there are also Larry Kirkland, John Burke, and Theodore Forester.
Recently, vampire executioners were granted the status of Federal Marshalls, enabling them to work across the country instead of needing a license for each state in which they practiced.
Bounty Hunters
It is legal in many states to hunt lycanthropes for bounty. Some states require only a post-mortem blood test to prove that the victim was a lycanthrope.
League of Human Voters
A political group that seeks to restrict the rights of vampires through purely political means.
Humans Against Vampires
A political group that seeks to restrict the rights of vampires. Largely this is through political means, but the splinter group Humans First uses violent actions against supernaturals to achieve their goals.
There are of course instances where Human's themselves become part of the preternatural.
Practitioners:Witches/Warlocks/Mages
Practitioners appear to be humans with magical talent focused through a variety of rituals. The novels contain numerous passing references to witches.
Upon issuance of a warrant, Practitioners now may be executed rather than captured and held for trial because, like vampires, there is no reliable way to confine a witch safely. Some witches can pass through bars, while others can use their powers from within a cell.
Similar to the relationship between a vampire and its human servant, a Practitioner's powers are magnified if the Practitioner's familiar is nearby.
A sufficiently powerful Practitioner can curse others the result of a practitioner focusing his or her entire magical power on another.
The term "Practitioner" is apparently used very generally, to refer to everyone from Wiccans to dark magicians and covens.
Most Practitioners connect their power and rituals to nature in some way.
Powers:
Spellcasting: Probably the most obvious characteristic of a witch was the ability to cast a spell, a "spell" being the word used to signify the means employed to accomplish a magical action. A spell could consist of a set of words, a formula or verse, or a ritual action, or any combination of these. Spells traditionally were cast by many methods, such as by the inscription of runes or sigils on an object to give it magical powers, by the immolation or binding of a wax or clay image (poppet) of a person to affect him or her magically, by the recitation of incantations, by the performance of physical rituals, by the employment of magical herbs as amulets or potions, by gazing at mirrors, swords or other specula (scrying) for purposes of divination, and by many other means.
Cabals:
A group of Practitioners are called a Cabal, within this group their are generally two leaders, a Priestess (female) and a Priest (male) both representing the God and Goddess in wiccan religion. In many traditional cabals there is a degree system, when a new Practitioner starts in the coven they are a First Degree, and as their powers grow, Second and then Third.....once the Practitioner has complete control over his or hers powers and are a valuable member of the Coven they are classed as an Elder. Most cabals just have a particular typr of practitioner in them, but some have been know to take on other humans with supernatural abilities....
Sorcerers
People who got magic through demonic-or worse-power. They bargained for what they got and bartered their souls for money, comfort, lust, power. But some were a version of possession. People weakened by some flaw: mental illness or even a flaw of character. The right kind of flaws can attract evil.
Animators
Typically, an animator engages in a ritual involving drawing a circle and sacrificing an animal, usually a chicken or goat. However, in some cases, no ritual is required. The longer time a person has been dead, the more powerful an animator must be in order to raise the zombie, and the greater of a sacrifice is required to do so. No animator can raise a body until its soul has passed, which usually occurs in about three days. Some Animators have the ability to sense the dead.
Some animators are vaundun priests. These animators are trained in the rituals of vaundun and can use their abilities in more sophisticated ways, including the creation of magical talismans called gris-gris.
Necromancers.
Necromancers have power not only to affect zombies, but have power over all of the dead, including vampires. They are able to sense other magic when active, and can destroy many spells simply by flooding the affected object with their own raw power.
Voodoo or Vaudun
It is both a religion and a power. You cannot be a Vaudun Priest without worshiping their gods. And many work death magics. Necromancy and Vaudun mix easily, and those who are both usually turn 'bad' as the temptation of easy power is too great. If attempting to kill a powerful Vaudun, they should be treated like vampires - cut the head off, dig the heart out and burn the body, as they can be brought back from death.
The Religion
Voodoo, not to be mistaken for Hoodoo, is a complex mix of many different older religions created by African slaves in the Caribbean during their transit. Their gods, or the Lao, and the worship of the Lao, called Iwa, teaches that there are no accidents. Practitioners believe that nothing and no event has a life of its own, that everything and everyone are interconnected.
Euphemisms: White Goat - Human sacrifice, Hornless Goat - Human
Vaudun Magic:
Gris-gris - A charm of woven rope, feathers and beads, worn as an armband and fed with blood. Some gris-gris can cheat death, but they must be fed with immortal blood - mortal blood will undo the spell. Other gris-gris can bring wealth, power or sex - these require the sacrifice of virgins, children or preadolescence boys. A necromancy-testing gris-gris is made from black feathers, bone and a mummified hawk's foot, which reacts to a necromancer.
Verve - Symbols drawn in a Vaudun sanctuary to summon The Lao. Usually brackets a pathway to the altar, or on or around the grave of the person they are raising.
Miscellaneous
They cannot enter a cemetery at night without a permit, because of their stereotype
Signs of a vaudun ritual include verve drawn in chalk, blood and sometimes a dead fire.
Psychically Gifted
Humans with psychic abilities are often sneered at and dismissed by other preternatural groups, they keep to themselves. Very little more is known about this group in the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter world.
The ones that we see are powerful in their own right - but they are few and far between, and many are mentally fragile.
The word psychic relates to the mind or soul, rather than the physical and physiological. It`s commonly used when referring to the paranormal, occult or supernatural.
Those who have extraordinary powers, use the word to describe their abilities. There is no scientific evidence that psychic powers exist, as claiming the possession of such gifts is subjective, and the onus of proof is on the individual.
Different individuals explain how they have acquired their powers in different ways. Some are born with them, some attribute them to a traumatic experience, and others develop them through training. Some believe that everyone is capable of developing their psychic powers.
Most Human preternatural abilities are much the same with only methodologies and affinities differing as such I've lumped into one pot for you to decipher and apply at leisure. (One note although humans may have special abilities they aren't as potent as the other surpernatural templates as humans aren't nearly as hardy.) Those powers are:
Psionic Abilities: To be respectfully blunt, those with psionic abilities are not the X-men or the cast from Captain Planet; in other words, such individuals cannot control every aspect of the physical world. Time can be made to seem distorted but not directly controlled (this distortion goes along with telepathy), nor can the weather be controlled globally or otherwise as some might wish to believe or do believe. A psionic individual may be able to make snow begin to swirl around them, but a snow storm or anything other than a distance of a 5-6 feet in the distance is just not possible; the human brain is only capable of so much before it suffers damage (the brain; not the mind).
All elements can be used by the psionic individual who posses such abilities, but it is not the elements themselves that are being manipulated, it is the temperature or form of the element that is undergoing this manipulation. If one claims that they can manipulate fire, they are manipulating heat (pyrokinesis); if one claims that they can manipulate earth, they are simply moving it in some way (telekinesis); if one claims that they can manipulate wind, they are simply moving particles (again, telekinesis). There is also no such ability as what has been turned “cryokinesis” which supposedly means that one can manipulate things of a cold nature (usually ice is used as an example); there is no such thing as “cold” as being a completely different temperature set; it is simply a decreases of a heated temperature; thus, the ability is still pyrokinesis.
The supposed ability of “Gravokinesis” is the ability to manipulate gravity. This false ability has undergone the same problems as the elemental abilities mentioned above; if gravity is manipulated, objects are, put simply, not bound to the *everything that comes up must come down” situation; thus, these objects can be levitated and thus “defy” gravity; this is nothing more than telekinesis in practice.
Nothing can be completely controlled; only manipulated. For example, If one picks up a rock and throws it; it is not completely controlled because various other aspects (wind, for example) will have influence over how it moves through the air and land; even if the person dealing with the rock is a psisentient, other factors still come into play because of all of the other aspects that cannot be controlled at the same time; the rock cannot be completely controlled; only manipulated
Psychokinesis(a.k.a., Telekinesis) - Ability to manipulate and control objects with the mind. An extremely powerful psychokinetic might be able to control individual atoms. This includes the ability to control temperature, earth, and molecules. They are all forms of manipulating the objects or atoms around the user. Telekinetics are able to manipulate some things easier than others, and what they can manipulate is as individual as the person themselves. No two Telekinetic will be the same, but no telekinetic can manipulate all elements all the time.
Technopathy - Ability to control technology with the mind.
Pyrokinesis - The ability to create and or control fire and heat. This also includes the ability to produce solar energy or heat. The power can manipulate living obejcts who take in the sun's energy to grow or fill with life. When skilled in the power they can create the heat of the sun to heat/burn.
Electrokinesis - The ability to manipulate electrical fields with only the use of the mind.
Magnokinesis - The ability to manipulate magnetic fields with only the use of the mind.
Photokinesis - The ability to manipulate light with only the use of the mind.
Hydrokinesis - The ability to manipulate water with only the use of the mind.
Aerokinesis - The ability to manipulate air with only the use of the mind.
Chlorokinesis - Ability to control plant life.
Vitakinesis – The ability to heal mentally and/or physically with only the use of the mind.
Latrosis - The ability to heal physical condition with only the use of the mind.
Mentatis – The ability to heal mental condition with only the use of the mind.
Algesis – The ability to harm physically with only the use of the mind.
Quantakinesis – The ability to manipulate certain homeostatic and inherited internal characteristics in the body with only the use of the mind..
Sensory Empathy – The ability to know the emotions and internal physical state of others with only the use of the mind.
Levitation - Ability to use the mind or another gravitional replusion/negation method to lift off the ground. A form of telekinesis but limited to the user only.
Molecular Combustion - The power to speed up ("heat") molecules in an object until they lose molecular cohesion, effectively causing the object to disintegrate or explode.
Power Draining - The ability to drain the magical and mystical powers from others. The very nature of said action would cause any being born with magical and mystical abilities to become sick.
Superhuman Speed - Ability to react faster than a normal human.
Metaphysical Abilities: These powers are the more common in human preternaturals, A practitioner can only have three metaphysical powers and only reaches the total of three when he or her has mastered their powers. Metapshycal powers a practitioners first defense and are easier to master. Normally powers are passed on through families but sometimes powers can manifest to that persons personality.
Absorption - Ability to absorb various forms of energy, and re-emit them either as a similar effect or use to fuel their own power.
Animation - Power to bring inanimate objects to life or to free a person from petrifaction.
Astral Projection - Ability to separate and control one's astral body.
Clairvoyance - Ability to see things that are not seen with the physical eyes. Can see visions of things occurring in the present.
Clairsentience - The ability to perceive the astral/ethereal world with the use of the physical senses.
Cloaking - the ability to hide yourself or someone supernaturally from others.
Deflection - the ability to deflect another's powers away from you and back at the attacker.
Empathy - Ability to read, sense, and/or control the emotions and/or feelings of others.
Empathic Mimicry - The ability to instantly mimic any other psionic ability you come into contact with.
Enhanced Senses - Enhancements of sight, smell, taste, touch, and/or hearing.
Photographic Memory - Ability to recall the past with great accuracy and in seemingly unlimited volume.
Precognition - The ability to see into the future through indirect perception; However since the exact future is not perceivable due to the fact that the future is always changing, it is highly unlikely to ever get an exact image of what is to come. This is why the author uses the phrase “indirect perception” to define this ability..
Psychometry - Ability to relate details about the past and/or future condition of an object, person or location, usually by being in close contact with it.
Omnilingualism - Ability to decipher any language.
Telepathy - Ability to read the thoughts of, and to mentally communicate with others. Strong telepaths may be able to actually manipulate others thoughts to their advantage.
Teleportation - Ability to move from one place to another without occupying the space in between.
Temporal Stasis (also known as Molecular Inhibition) - The power to slow down ("freeze") molecules in an object until they effectively stop moving.
Transmogrification - Changing shape or features of that person.
Superhuman Speed - Ability to react faster than a normal human.
Amnemopathy - The ability to erase the long-term and short-term memories of others. This is often associated with vampires who roll human minds. Some humans, though rare, are able to do this as well.
Aura Reading - The ability to see the life forces, emotions of animals and humans by means of colors that surround them.
